The Marble Canyon and its history
The heart of the natural area — the Ruskeala mountain reserve — welcomes guests with the emerald surface of the Marble Canyon, frozen in a frame of snow-white cliffs. Once, here in the thickness of the mountain, stone was mined for St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Hermitage, and now these adits and mines preserve only the echo of bygone centuries.
The quarrying began back in the 17th century, and the largest-scale marble extraction in these parts took place during the reign of Catherine II. The extraction of valuable stone was temporarily suspended at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, and in Soviet times the industrial site began to be developed again.
After the plant was launched, stone was mined until the early 1990s; Ruskeala marble was used for finishing many historical monuments and St. Petersburg metro stations. Beautiful finishing with rare marble can today be seen at the Primorskaya and Ladozhskaya metro stations.
Today the depth of the canyon is about 50 meters; it is filled with crystal-clear water that can be seen more than 15 meters deep. The length of the Marble Canyon is 450 meters, and its maximum width reaches 100 meters. In 2005, the historical and natural value of the Marble Canyon was recognized, and on its basis a reserve was created with many waterfalls, caves, and other natural treasures.
The natural area is actively used for filming modern movies. The films “Dark World,” “The Seventh Rune” (2014), “The Trail of the Piranha” (2014), “The Golden Trap” (2010), and “Flint” (2010) were filmed here.
Ahvenkoski Waterfalls
You will walk along picturesque trails along steep banks, peering from observation platforms into the mysterious depths of the clear waters. You will descend into the underground part of Ruskeala to see mysterious grottoes and the Great Column Hall, illuminated by soft light. The complex of four waterfalls is conveniently located on the way from Sortavala to Ruskeala; its main feature is considered to be the brown tint of the water. The waterfalls, whose height is 3–4 meters, are fed by the mountain river Tokhmajoki, whose waters are saturated with humic acids. The waterfall complex is hidden among picturesque coniferous forests and cliffs; a popular ecological trail runs nearby, sculptures of fairy-tale characters are installed, and a cafe and souvenir shop operate.
