The central place in the ensemble is occupied by the Grand Menshikov Palace — a majestic monument of 18th-century architecture, built in the early Baroque style according to the design of architects Giovanni Fontana and Gottfried Schädel for the first governor of St. Petersburg, the closest associate of Peter the Great — Prince Alexander Danilovich Menshikov.

The palace rises on a coastal hill and seems to float above the surroundings. Its central part is crowned with a princely coronet, and two wings, designed as galleries, lead to the eastern and western outbuildings, forming a ceremonial cour d'honneur. At different times, the owners of Oranienbaum were Prince Menshikov, Emperor Peter III, and Empress Catherine II, who left their mark on the history and appearance of the residence.
