Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the 18th century as you walk through the state rooms of the Gatchina Palace. Then, stepping out into the Gatchina Park, you can stroll through the formal gardens and discover the corners of Russia's first landscape park.
The Karpin Pond, the Island of Love, and the Grotto-Echo hold a special place. Gatchina Park is a true open-air museum, where every bridge, every pavilion, and every tree preserves the memory of romantic walks, hunting amusements, and family secrets of the Russian emperors.
Today, the Gatchina Palace is a living museum where history comes alive in every detail, where you can touch the past and feel the breath of bygone eras.
The history of the Gatchina Palace begins in 1766. Catherine the Great gifted Gatchina with all its buildings to her favorite, Grigory Orlov. The palace is surrounded by Gatchina Park, one of the largest and most beautiful in the world.
The Russian imperial court was one of the most brilliant courts in Europe throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Foreign guests, walking through the enfilades of state rooms, were struck by the luxury of the interiors and the complexity of palace ceremonies. The best European architects, sculptors, and artists worked for the Russian imperial court, and their creations still adorn the halls of the Gatchina Palace.
Here you can see works by Antonio Rinaldi, Vincenzo Brenna, Andrei Stackenschneider, as well as a unique collection of paintings, furniture, and decorative and applied art. Special attention deserves the underground passage 135 meters long, which leads from the palace to the shore of the Silver Lake. This passage was used for access to the water and romantic walks of the imperial family.
