Pushkin: Tsarskoye Selo, the palace and routes from St. Petersburg

Pushkin is a town of imperial residences, parks and literary memory near St. Petersburg. The main impression is built around the Catherine Palace, the Amber Room, Catherine Park, the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum and leisurely walks through the palace ensemble.

Pushkin and Tsarskoye Selo: the history of an imperial residence

The history of Tsarskoye Selo began with the Sarskaya Manor, which Peter I gave to Catherine Alexeyevna in 1710. The country estate gradually became a ceremonial residence tied to the imperial court, landscape art and 18th-century architecture.

The grand appearance of the ensemble took shape under Elizabeth Petrovna. The Catherine Palace received an expressive Baroque facade, gilded details, ceremonial halls and a long palace enfilade. Later the residence was complemented by parks, pavilions, ponds, bridges and the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum.

In 1937 the town was named Pushkin. The historical name Tsarskoye Selo remained alongside it as a designation of the palace-and-park ensemble, imperial memory and Pushkin's youth.

Pushkin today Pushkin remains a destination for a leisurely one-day trip. People come here for the palace, the park, the Amber Room, the Lyceum, the ponds and the long alleys. The format is easy to adapt to the season: in summer more time goes to the park, in winter to the palace and museum halls.

What to see in Pushkin

The main point of the route is the Catherine Palace. From there it is convenient to plan a walk through the park, heading to the Great Pond, the Cameron Gallery, the pavilions and the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum.

  • Catherine Park with the Great Pond, bridges and pavilions
  • The Amber Room inside the Catherine Palace
  • The Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, associated with Alexander Pushkin
  • The Cameron Gallery, the Grotto, the Admiralty and park views
  • Alexander Park for a calmer part of the walk

For a first visit, the combination of the palace, the park and the Lyceum works well. Such a route gives a complete impression of Tsarskoye Selo without unnecessary walking around the town.

Catherine Palace and Park

The Catherine Palace sets the ceremonial tone for the whole trip. The facade, the enfilade of halls, the Great Hall and the decorative interiors show the scale of the imperial residence.

  • The Great Hall with mirrors, gilded stucco and ceremonial light
  • The Arabesque Drawing Room and other ceremonial interiors of the palace
  • Catherine Park with alleys, ponds and pavilions
  • The Cameron Gallery as one of the most recognizable spots in the park

It is best to plan a visit to the palace in advance, especially during high season and school holidays.

The Amber Room in the Catherine Palace

The Amber Room in the Catherine Palace

The Amber Room emerged as a rare palace interior created from amber panels, mirrors, gilding, and mosaics. The idea originally originated in Prussia, and in 1716 the amber cabinet was presented to Peter I as a diplomatic gift.

In Tsarskoye Selo, the interior was completed under Elizabeth Petrovna. Rastrelli incorporated the amber panels into the space of the Catherine Palace, complementing them with mirrored pilasters and gilded carving. By 1770, the hall had become part of the palace's ceremonial life.

During the Great Patriotic War, the original interior was lost. In the late 20th century, the recreation of the Amber Room began based on archival materials, photographs, and surviving fragments. In 2003, the hall was reopened to visitors.

  • Amber panels in shades from light honey to cognac
  • Mirrored pilasters that enhance light and the depth of the space
  • Florentine mosaics of stone and marble
  • Restoration using historical techniques and archival materials

After the Lyceum, the route can be continued toward Alexander Park. Thus, in one day a clear line takes shape: the ceremonial part of the residence, the park, Pushkin's history, and a quieter walking area.

  • Start – Catherine Palace and the park entrance
  • Next – the Big Pond, the Grotto, the Admiralty, and the Cameron Gallery
  • After that – the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum and places of Pushkin's memory

When is the best time to go

The warm season is ideal for a long walk through Catherine Park: the water, bridges, pavilions, and alleys make it easy to spend a peaceful day on the estate grounds.

In autumn, the palace looks beautiful against the backdrop of foliage, while in winter it is best to focus on the interiors, the Amber Room, and the museum section.
