You can see glowing plankton in Nha Trang during an unusual night SUP tour near Bai Dai Beach.

After the briefing, we paddle out on SUPs about 170–200 meters from the shore, where, away from the bright coastal lights, you can observe the bioluminescence of plankton.

Bai Dai Beach and preparation for the SUP tour

The starting point will be Bai Dai Beach (Bãi Dài) in the Cam Ranh area.

Before going out to sea, a safety and SUP handling briefing is provided. You will receive the necessary equipment: a SUP board, paddle, life jacket, mask and snorkel.

No special SUP experience is required. The instructor will explain the basic rules before the tour begins.

Night SUP tour

After preparation, the group paddles out on SUPs about 170–200 meters from the shore.

Around you remain the dark sea, the night sky and the lights of the coast. Throughout the route, the group is accompanied by a Russian-speaking guide.

The duration of the tour on the water is about 1–1.5 hours.

Bioluminescent plankton

The main goal of the night tour is to see the glowing plankton.

When the water moves, microorganisms can create bluish and greenish flashes. Run your paddle or hand through the water — and small glowing dots appear around the movement.

The effect is especially noticeable in the dark water away from bright coastal lighting.

A natural phenomenon best seen with your own eyes

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, so the intensity of the glow may vary depending on the state of the sea, weather, amount of plankton, moon phase and other natural conditions.

There is another interesting detail: a phone camera usually captures the glow much worse than the human eye. That's why the photos on the page are an illustration of the effect, and the actual brightness of the plankton may differ.

After the tour ends, we return to shore and head back to Nha Trang.
