Imagine: you're standing at the edge of a high terrace, and before you unfolds a grand water theater where the main roles are played by gold, light, and the living elements. This is the Grand Cascade in Peterhof – the main fountain ensemble of the residence and one of the most famous attractions of St. Petersburg.

It is here that tourists from all over the world come to see the famous fountains of Peterhof, the legendary «Samson», and the luxurious ensemble that, by Peter the Great's design, was meant to outshine even the French Versailles.

What is the Grand Cascade in Peterhof

The Grand Cascade is considered a monumental symbol of Russia's victory in the Great Northern War and its access to the Baltic Sea. It is inextricably linked with architecture: the Grand Palace and the cascade form a single ensemble, where the palace seems to rise above the streams of water.

From here, the famous view of the Sea Canal opens up – it was along this canal that guests on sailing ships approached the imperial residence directly in the 18th century.

History of the Grand Cascade's creation

The idea of the Grand Cascade in Peterhof belonged personally to Peter the Great, who himself made sketches of the future masterpiece. Construction took place from 1714 to 1724 under the guidance of outstanding masters: Leblond, Michetti, and Zemtsov. An interesting fact: the first statues of the Grand Cascade were made of lead, but they quickly tarnished and deteriorated under water splashes. Therefore, at the turn of the 18th–19th centuries, they were replaced with durable bronze ones, covered with sparkling gold leaf. During the Great Patriotic War, the cascade was reduced to ruins, and the main sculptures were stolen. What we see today is the result of the titanic work of restorers who recreated the fountains bit by bit and from old photos.

Uniqueness of the Grand Cascade

The Grand Cascade in Peterhof is considered a unique engineering and artistic structure with no analogues in the world. It operates without pumps for over 300 years, includes dozens of amazing fountains and hundreds of sculptures, and is also the largest fountain ensemble in Russia.

That is why the Grand Cascade is considered the main attraction of Peterhof and a must-visit place.

Statues of the Grand Cascade

In total, the Grand Cascade has more than 200 sculptures – it is one of the most large-scale ensembles in Europe. Among them are heroes of ancient mythology: Neptune, Venus, Jupiter, Perseus, and others. Each figure here is not accidental and symbolizes the power, victory, and greatness of the state. For example, Perseus with the head of Medusa symbolizes Russia's victory over the enemy. When water streams down the steps, it creates the impression that the golden statues come alive in motion.

The Samson Fountain

At the center of the composition is the main symbol of Peterhof – the Samson Fountain. The mighty hero tearing open a lion's mouth symbolizes Russia's victory over Sweden in the Battle of Poltava. The lion here is an image of the Swedish coat of arms, and Samson is the personification of the state's power. From the mouth of the defeated beast bursts the most powerful jet in Peterhof, rising to a record height of 20 meters.

Grottoes of the Grand Cascade

Behind the streams of water are hidden the grottoes of the Grand Cascade – one of the most interesting places in Peterhof. The Lower Grotto is a hall with stone finishing and decorative elements, where 18th-century engineering structures have been preserved. Peter the Great loved to play tricks on guests: as soon as someone reached for a vase of fruit on the table, jets of water would shoot from hidden pipes, drenching everyone present. Today, any tourist can go inside to see the authentic brick galleries and ancient pipes from the same 18th century.

Waterfall staircases

The ensemble is based on two symmetrical staircases, along which water descends in cascades. The water begins its journey from the masks of Neptune and Bacchus, then the streams pass through decorative bowls and sculptures, creating the effect of a living waterfall. In the center is the Basket Fountain, where intertwining streams of water imitate delicate wickerwork.
