The Scarlet Sails festival is one of the most famous festivals in St. Petersburg and the main event of the white nights. Every year at the end of June, thousands of graduates gather on Palace Square to celebrate the end of school and see the legendary brig Russia with scarlet sails passing along the Neva under a grand salute. We tell you when the show begins, where it is best to watch the ship and the fireworks, whether tickets can be bought and which spots are considered the best for viewing the celebration.

History of the Scarlet Sails festival in St. Petersburg

The Scarlet Sails celebration first appeared in Leningrad in 1968 and immediately became a symbol of graduation for thousands of school leavers. Inspired by Alexander Grin's tender and profound novella, the holiday turned a literary fantasy into a living spectacle: a ship with scarlet sails became, for young hearts, a symbol of unwavering faith, hope, and the beginning of a journey where every wish is sure to come true. Today this magical role is played by the legendary brig Russia, whose silhouette in the pearly haze of the Neva seems like a beautiful vision embodying the awe before the threshold of adult life.

After a long hiatus in the 1990s, the tradition returned to Saint Petersburg in 2005, quickly becoming one of Russia's largest and most mesmerizing events. Today the Scarlet Sails celebration takes place in the very heart of the city, drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators from all corners of the country. Palace Square remains the main stage for saying goodbye to childhood, hosting a grand concert for graduates, while the culmination unfolds on the Neva as sparks of fireworks scatter across the sky and the sailing ship slowly glides toward the future.

Where the Scarlet Sails 2026 festival takes place in St. Petersburg

The entire center of Saint Petersburg will turn into a festive space. Scarlet Sails rehearsals: when you can see the brig Russia

If you want to avoid huge crowds, come to the Scarlet Sails rehearsals. They begin as early as the start of June, and this is that unique time when you can see the brig Russia in an almost intimate setting.

Approximate rehearsal dates: June 11 and 12 in the evening (from 21:45 to 01:00).

Dress rehearsal: June 27. This is that rare moment when, in preparation for the show, traffic may be restricted and even bridges may be raised during the daytime in Saint Petersburg, allowing you to examine the legendary ship in every detail without the usual bustle.

Scarlet Sails: Can You Buy Tickets to the Festival

Many ask: "How much does a ticket cost? Can tourists get into Scarlet Sails?" Officially, tickets are not sold. Invitations are issued only to graduates, their parents, and teachers. Please be careful: if someone offers to sell you a ticket, they are scammers. The design of the invitations changes every year and has a high level of security, so getting into Palace Square "through the back door" won't work.

Where Is the Best Place to Watch Scarlet Sails and the Fireworks

Here is a list of locations in St. Petersburg with a beautiful view of the fireworks and the passage of the frigate with scarlet sails:

Birzhevoy Bridge: perhaps the best vantage point to watch the appearance of the brig Rossiya.
Embankments: Admiralteyskaya, Universitetskaya and Angliyskaya – from here you get the most breathtaking views of the fireworks and the passage of the sailing ship.
Petrovskaya Embankment: there are usually slightly fewer people here, but the view of the water area is still breathtaking. The main thing is to take your spot in advance, several hours ahead, because thousands will want to see the Scarlet Sails.

When the last volleys fade and the brig slowly disappears beyond the horizon of the Palace Bridge, a special silence descends on the city. It is the silence of hope. Yesterday's children become adults, and Petersburg, with its austere architecture and free-flowing Neva, blesses them on this path. The Scarlet Sails is a reminder to us all that there is always room for a miracle in life, and our main ship will surely come for us if we never stop dreaming.

However, to truly deeply understand the character of the city, it is better to choose a full-fledged multi-day tour that includes visits to the most iconic landmarks. Such sightseeing bus tours will allow you to connect a visit to the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral, walks along Nevsky Prospect and visits to country residences into a single picture, showing you the very St. Petersburg that will make you fall in love at first sight and will stay in your memory for a long time.
